Performance
The performance part is divided into three crucial factors: CPU, GPU, and efficiency. The Central Processing Unit AKA CPU is the brain of a computing chip. Hence, it should be sufficiently powerful to manage multitasking and other tasks. Starting with Snapdragon 7 Gen 1, it arrives with a tri-cluster CPU, where the primary Cortex-A710 core clocks at 2.5GHz for the Accelerated Edition and 2.4GHz for that standard variant. Anyway, it brings another three Cortex-A710 cores clocked at 2.36GHz and four power-efficient Cortex-A510 clocked at 1.8GHz.
On the other hand, Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 runs on a dual-cluster CPU. It has four Cortex-A78 cores clocked at 2.4GHz and four Cortex-A55 cores clocked at 1.95GHz. Frequency-wise, both the chipsets look identical. But, it would be worth noting that the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 chip uses the latest architectures, which according to the company is 30% more power-efficient and delivers 10% additional performance within a fixed power envelope. Apart from that, both the chipsets are manufactured on Samsung’s 4nm fabrication. Overall, both the chipsets are equally powerful in terms of CPU performance. But, Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 is more power-efficient given the ARM’s updated hardware.
The Graphics Processing Unit AKA GPU is another considerable factor, especially for gamers. It helps to manage the graphics-intensive tasks. Speaking of the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1, it arrives with an Adreno 644 GPU clocked at 443MHz. Likewise, the Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 is loaded with Adreno 710 GPU clocked at 940MHz. The benchmark scores are a good indicator to judge the overall performance of a computing chip. For smartphones, Antutu and Geekbench are the two most popular benchmarking platforms. So, we will consider these two platforms to judge the performance of these chipsets. Starting with Antutu, Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 Accelerated Edition-powred Honor 90 scores 7,12,665 points on Antutu. Detailing it out, it scored 2,15,302 points in CPU, 1,67,733 points in GPU, 1,82,992 points in MEM, and 1,46,633 points in UX.
On the other hand, Snapdragon 7s Gen 2-powered Realme 12 Pro+ slightly stays behind to the Honor 90 with 6,50,973 points. For comparison, it scored 2,13,128 points in CPU, 1,21,469 points in GPU, 1,68,238 points in MEM, and 1,48,138 points in UX. It clearly indicates that the Adreno 644 GPU is more powerful than the Snapdragon 7s Gen 2’s Adreno 710 GPU. Meanwhile, the rest of the scores are almost identical in both the chipsets.
If we consider the Geekbench scores, they also tell the same story. It is understood that Geekbench is a reliable source for checking CPU performance. Starting with the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 Accelerated Edition, it scored 976 points in single-core and 2782 points in multi-core results. Its key rival Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 scored 947 points in single-core and 2891 points in multi-core results. Thus, both the chipsets are equally powerful as per the Geekbench results.
Camera & Connecitivity
Both the chipsets share almost similar configurations when it comes to the camera department. For reference, these chipsets support up to 16MP triple camera setup, 32MP + 16MP dual cameras, 48MP single camera or 64MP pixel binning for video recording, and up to 200MP single camera for photo capturing. Both the chipsets are very well capable of recording up to 4K video @30FPS or 1080p video recording @120FPS.
However, there is a small change in image processing. The Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 carries 14-bit triple ISPs, slightly more capable than the Snapdragon 7s Gen 2’s 12-bit triple ISPs. Overall, there shouldn’t be any problem with both the chipsets when selecting a good camera setup for smartphone manufacturers.
In terms of connectivity, all the necessary connectivity options are present, such as WiFi 6E, and Bluetooth 5.2 using the Qualcomm FastConnect 6700 chip inside. The satellite systems are supported by QZSS, Galileo, Beidou, NavIC, GLONASS, and GPS. Both the SoCs carry a Snapdragon X62 model for internet connectivity. Both are more than capable of achieving great internet speeds, which is slightly higher around 4.4Gbps download speed for Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 compared to 2.9Gbps for Snapdragon 7s Gen 2. But achieving such kind of insane speed is almost impossible for an average user. So, it shouldn’t affect much.
Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 vs Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 – Conclusion
By wrapping it up, both the chipsets are very well capable of handling normal tasks, but not designed for heavy users. When we compare them, the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 is more power-efficient than the Snapdragon 7s Gen 2. It also scored more in the GPU department. So, it should be more capable in the gaming department. However, both the chipsets are not developed for gaming, but for casual gamers, the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 should perform better.
Overall, 7 Gen 1 is the winner for its more powerful GPU and power-efficient CPU. These chipsets share the rest of the specifications in an equal way.
